Is The PICKUP All That Matters?
You don't have to go digging too deep on the internet to find debates about whether "tonewood" is a thing or not.
On one extreme end are of people who believe that the pickup is the only thing that matters. You could put a given pickup on a slab of cheese and it'll sound just like a handcrafted instrument made out of the finest piece of maple.
On the other end are people who think that the composition of the instrument body is INCREDIBLY important to the sound of the instrument.
Well, there's one way to know for sure. Let's go into the lab and find out for ourselves.
We play 5 different violins, all with Starfish pickups. Now, Starfish pickups are handmade and there's bound to be a small amount of variability from pickup to pickup. And Matt isn't a machine. He's going to sound a little different each time he plays. But we've done what we can to minimize the variables. All of these clips were recorded within 30 minutes into the exact same signal path with the same bow.
You be the judge. Does the instrument body matter?

Coming from the classical world, where you can easily pay $20K and up (way, way up), for a good instrument, I was delighted to discover that a high-end electric fiddle is like, $6K, and you can a good instrument for much less.
What's a flanger?
With wha pedal?
My HX Stomp into a Catalyst amp.
Thicc as heck!!!
Thanks man. I intend to get one when I can. 🎉
Love the springbok Rugby jersey!
🚢
But I thought it was EADGBE!!! 😉
A swing and a miss. 😂
Busted
TRUMPET!!?? It all makes sense now. 🤔😂😉
Right?
Electric Orchestra Class. Awesome
That is a beautiful fiddle ❤
Golden medal shorts score
I know next to nothing about violin, I'm a drummer mostly, but the range y'all are getting is unreal!
6 string violins are FaDolins! So cool!
That’s amazing 🤩
I wanna learn that chopping technique. 🪓
Hit up Tracy Silverman

@@ElectricViolinShop Thanks! 🎻
It’s a bout time Matt….
Great video
Had no idea about almost all of this - appreciate the plugs 👌🏼
Sharon Corr from The Corrs ised Barcus Berry alot!
charlie chaplin played the violin left handed.

If you’re new to electric violin, like me, you’ll soon discover that most of the electronic contraptions are designed for guitar. So, I’m reading a book called “Guitar Pedals: Mastering Guitar Effects”, by Rob Thorpe; I’m finding it very helpful. it’s also just plain fun to buy a couple of gizmos and fool around with them. Like Matt says, just turn the knobs and see what happens. I may be a noob, but I will offer this advice: do this when your wife’s not around. or your dog. or actually, any living creature with ears.
THE DEEPER TONES ON VIOLIN OMGOSH
YEV + accoustic simular pedail + EQ PEDAL and some Room reverb and delay. It’s time for an Irish party
Can you plug the receiver straight into a Bose sound speaker (which has reverb button)?
Yes
Pedals are fun
Sounds similar to a ukulele
I play Electric bass and I asked two of my friends how the violin was tuned, we left the conversations really confused but now I understand
Truth hurts sometimes!😂
I’m learning so much about general audio production from this series! Thanks a bunch! Also new vocab term: circuitous
I do not like you violin why is it confusing 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😅😅😅😅😅😅😅
do you have any electric upright basses?
Yes. Yamaha and NS Design both make great basses.
Volta? Lol
Nice one
Twas I first? Nice
Cantini❤! I finally get it, thank you Lord!
When I was a kid, I was a 3rd violin. Turned out, that was a closet VIOLIST. I never did learn to read e string above the g above the lines
Also, 2nd is harder to understand and practice bc the melody is often lost. So like you say you learn to make the harmonization work.
The note is D#. I’ve got perfect pitch lol.
I ain't messing with anyone who reads from that legendary third clef, man. 😅
love you man :-)
I just bought a cheap electric violin my head phone won't work at the back though 115 pound can u u please help me learn to play x
I’m a violist. Our bows are longer. Just sayin’. 🙄
#teamviola
People who think your violins are overpriced have never seen the violins that orchestra violinists buy.
That’s funny, I was a First- - First Chair 2nd Violinist!!😂😂
This guy accidentally ordered a crate of violas. 🤣
Too many cuts. Way too many cuts.
When you do your content, you can do it your way.
@@ElectricViolinShop I do. I can also continue with an Idea and a thought process in one take
What separates the Violas from the apes?…The 2nd Violins.
@@ragsbombadil195 Take it easy, buddy
@codascheuer8426 tell that fiddle man. My goodness his remark was smarmy as heck. I think someone hurt him.
